How and What to Choose for Non Comedogenic Foundations

One of the things that I don’t want to remind myself from my adolescence is having those red pimples on my face. Unfortunately, as a 25-year-old woman now, I am still struggling with this. I started to have acnes since 14, until now, my face was covered by some pimple scars and new acnes keep coming out every week. Even it is not as bad as my teenagerhood, but it is still a big pain.

If you have the same problem as I do, you probably understand how it feels: you refuse to go outside with acne face, but makeup makes will your skin worse, which is like a vicious circle… I’ve come a long way of my strategy of using needles to open the clogged pores and squeeze, and trying different products which claimed will be perfectly work for curing acnes, but they just didn’t work. I just want to wear makeup, why it’s so difficult? So, in this article, I am going to share you all of my research and experiences to choose non comedogenic foundations.

Why I still have acnes in my 20s? even 30s?

So, start with the problem itself: What on earth cause acnes? After reading tons of reports on web, the root is very simple: excess skin oil and bacteria.

Skin oil, also called sebum, are produced by our sebaceous glands to protect skin. But for oily skin type, it normally causes excess sebum, which will clog the pore and then acnes happen. So, if you are oily skin type, like me, you just easily to get acnes than other people, even you’ve left your adolescence behind.  Also, hormones can cause excess sebum too. So, tress, pregnancy, PMS and so on can make you have more acnes than usual.

On the other hand, bacteria are the other reason of causing acnes. Basically, acnes are skin inflammation. When bacteria happen to enter your pores, your skin will react as inflammation to protect itself. This often caused by your cleaning habits and has nothing to do with age.

What can you do to avoid adult acnes?

Adult acnes are such a pain to every of us. To avoid it, the methods must be based on the root we mentioned above. Here are some tips for you which are really helpful to me.

  • Must use oil-free skin care products and makeup.
  • Do deep-clean mask 2-3 times a week.
  • Stay hydrated. Your skin will produce more sebum when it lacks water.
  • Eat more veggies. Have less protein and sugar.
  • Pat your face to dry, instead of using a towel. Towels usually contain a lot of bacteria. If you have to use a towel, make sure you boil it once a week.
  • Do NOT use your hand touch your face often.
  • The last but not the least: do NOT squeeze the acnes. Also be careful when they breakout.

Can you still wear makeup?

You can! Even makeup is one of the reasons that cause acnes, but as a woman lives in 21st century, it just doesn’t make sense to give up makeup! However, the point is to find the makeup for your skin type. And for oily skin, non-comedogenic foundation is a must.

How to choose a Non Comedogenic Foundation?

What is non comedogenic foundation tho? It is a kind of foundation for acne prone skin, which is oil-free and contains dimethicone or cyclomethicone. However, there are tons of foundations out there claim that they are non-comedogenic, you need to be smart to pick the right one among them. In this case, you need to know how to check your beauty and skincare ingredients first.

Rule NO.1: Oil-free

Oil-free foundation means it does not contain any type of oil. Oil-based foundation helps to moisture the skin, so it is better for dry skin type, because it may cause a breakout if you are acne prone skin type.

Rule NO.2: No denatured alcohol

If you find out that your foundation contains denature alcohol, then you probably should throw it away. Denatured alcohol is a kind of simple alcohol which are normally used in beauty and skin care products, like SD alcohol. According to Lauren Hubbard’s blog, Simple alcohols are great at sweeping away oil, which may sound particularly appealing if your skin is naturally oily or acne prone. But your skin relies on its homegrown moisturizer (oil) to help it maintain its natural barrier against pollution, bacteria, and all of the other bad things you don’t want getting inside of your body, so stripping down all of that sebum also means leaving your skin exposed. This means your skin will get very dry by using denatured alcohol products.

I love this one! I bought it last winter at a Maybelline store and have been using it since then. What can I say about this product? I am typical oily skin but Fit Me is exactly made for my kind. First, it can absorb oil for a matte and poreless-looking finish. Second, its formula features micro-powders to control shine and blur pores. Third, it has 39 shades to choose, so no need to worry about if it will fits your skin color!

The coverage of this foundation is OK, but you still need to use concealer if you have obvious flaws. And, myself usually use this foundation together with Fit Me powder, and apply the powder in every 3 hours. Otherwise, my skin will still be oily and glossy. But generally speaking, it works pretty good for my skin.

This NARS foundation is the only oil-free foundation in their products. Its color is super nature and the foundation itself is not sticky at all. But the trouble thing is that NARS suggests you to apply this foundation with fingers, instead of brush or blinder. According to this video, using finger to apply will make a more nature look compare to using tools. However, the biggest problem is that it doesn’t hold so well, although it claims 16 hour-wear.
